“The transition out of professional football was extremely difficult. At times I felt lost and uncertain about the future. With Dr. Benson’s help I was able to develop the skills and mindset that helped me to quickly regain my confidence and achieve a leadership position.”
Former NFL Athlete,
Lead Therapeutic Coach, WESD Program
Dr. Tim’s humble beginnings provide the foundation for who he is today — a dynamic speaker passionate about helping others reach their highest potential.
He was raised in Jefferson City, Missouri where he excelled at football, basketball, and track in high school. He attended Hampton University on a full football scholarship and was a three-time NCAA Football Academic All-American, inducted into the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame as a scholar athlete.
He decided to pursue a career in medicine, which took him to the University of Rochester School of Medicine. His journey through medical school was one full of many obstacles and heart-wrenching challenges including the passing of his mother. This event prompted him to ponder one of the biggest decisions of his life — drop out of school or to push through and finish what he had started.
In 2000, Dr. Tim entered the Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital adult psychiatry residency program where he was the Chief Resident of addictions in his final year. He served as a clinical instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School for over 10 years and was medical director of several addiction facilities. In his private practice he specializes in treating elite athletes and high-achievers in business and academia.
His book, “Surviving Success” opened up a much needed dialogue about the challenges of being in the spotlight, allowing him the opportunity to speak to several professional sports teams including: The Seattle SeaHawks, The Boston Celtics, The New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams. This topic has also attracted colleges and high schools that recognize the need for their students to learn how to manage the pressures of maintaining high performance.
Based on his experience with professional athletes, Dr. Tim believes in the importance of building a strong mental foundation in younger elite athletes so that their personal development keeps pace with their professional development. He combines his own life experiences, his academic knowledge, and professional expertise to get his message out and connect with the audience in a deep and meaningful way. When Dr. Tim shares personal details about his fall from grace, there is a hush in the room, no matter the size of the crowd. He is a powerful storyteller who has the ability to make an audience of many feel like an audience of one.
